Polytech Lille is hosting Yaroslava Mosiichuk, Deputy Head of the Department of Water Resources and Head of the Young Scientists’ Council at the Institute of Water Problems and Land Reclamation of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine (Kyiv), for a four-week research stay throughout October within the NADIYA programme. During her visit she is working with Jean-Philippe Carlier from the Civil Engineering Department of Polytech Lille and the LaMcube laboratory.

Yaroslava holds a PhD in Construction and Civil Engineering. Her research focuses on sustainable water management and water quality, the design of closed water supply systems, and the treatment and reuse of wastewater and sludge. Before turning to research, she designed water supply and sewage facilities for municipal projects across Ukraine, and she currently contributes to the NATO Science for Peace and Security project Control of Black Sea Safety and Pollution Risks Using Numerical Models.

Her project studies how municipal wastewater treatment plants operate in France, with three focuses:

  • biological treatment technologies, such as bioflocculation;
  • sustainable sludge management, including volume reduction and processing;
  • the French regulatory framework for treatment plants, and how it could be adapted in Ukraine.

Her stay combines lectures and seminars, visits to municipal treatment plants, and a joint analysis comparing French and Ukrainian practices. The goal is to produce recommendations for modernising Ukrainian wastewater treatment plants as part of the country’s post-war recovery and its alignment with European environmental standards, and to lay the groundwork for a partnership between the two institutions.

The NADIYA programme is a co-financed initiative of the French Embassy in Ukraine (Institut français d’Ukraine) and the CDEFI (Conférence des Directeurs des Écoles Françaises d’Ingénieurs) that supports scientific exchanges between Ukrainian researchers and French engineering schools. Polytech Lille already welcomed Khrystyna Berladir from Sumy State University through the programme in November 2025.

For Polytech Lille, standing alongside Ukraine in these difficult times is a commitment, not a gesture. Despite the war, Ukrainian researchers and engineers continue to carry out remarkable work, and they will be at the heart of rebuilding their country’s infrastructure — starting with something as essential as clean water. Opening our departments, laboratories and networks to them is one of the most concrete ways an engineering school can help. We are proud to welcome Yaroslava and determined to keep building lasting ties with Ukrainian institutions.
